Dr. Ivatury Joga Rao was born in Vizianagaram. He came to Kakinada as a young Doctor, fresh from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam with a zeal and commitment to provide good and efficient surgical and medical care to residents of East Godavari District. With relentless pursuit of excellence and dedication, he built a busy practice and soon emerged as a single man medical institution serving people of both Godavari Districts and adjoining regions. He gave his best and life for the service of humanity for over three decades.Apart from being a busy surgeon, he was a man deeply interested in literature and wellbeing of fellow community. He served the area in various capacities – as a Rotary President, Member of selection committee for many colleges including P.R.Govt. College, Kakinada. He was a mentor and benefactor for innumerable people of varying walks of life, students and the old alike.
Dr. I. Joga Rao was one of the important members who helped the birth of Rangaraya Medical College and with the improvement of Govt. General Hospital, Kakinada.
His life was cut short tragically at 54 years of age due to a heart attack. He leaves behind a remarkable progeny – 3 daughters and 4 sons. The eldest son Dr. I.M.Rao, is a renowned Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon. The second son Dr. I.S.Raju, is one of the Directors of NASA, Virginia, USA. The third son Dr. I.R.Rao, is the Chief of Traumatology unit, Richmond, USA. His last son, Dr.I.V.Rao has retired as the Director of Medical Education, A.P. Hyderabad and Vice-Chancellor of Dr.N.T.R. University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.
In the honour and fond memory of a remarkable single man medical institution called Dr.I.Joga Rao, this endowment lecture is instituted.

Dr. Kuppachi Krishna Murty, an eminent physician, renowned academician and an outstanding student was born on 13 th November 1926.
He passed MBBS in 1950 from Andhra Medical College and was the Best Outgoing Student having bagged 5 Gold Medals. After completing MD (Medicine) in 1955 from the same College, he became a Professor in 1960. He worked as Professor in various Medical Colleges including JIPMER. and as Dean of NIMS.
Dr. Krishna Murty had advanced training in Medicine – Cardiology for one year during 1960-61 at Columbia University and worked with Dr. S.E.Bradley MD., Director, Department of Medicine and Dr. Andre Cournand, Nobel Laurette in Cardiology. He was awarded Certificate of Achievement by International Co-operation Administration of the Government of USA in the field of Medicine. He has done extensive research and unravelled the presence of sickle cell disease in the Relli Community of Visakhapatnam for the first time which study he presented in various academic fora.
Dr. Krishna Murty was the advisor to Union Public Commission. He was appointed as Honorary Physician to the President of India and Honorary Physician to the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He was also a member of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council and a member of the Board of Management of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar Open University of Andhra Pradesh.
Dr. Krishna Murty was elected as member of the Indian Academy of Medical Sciences and later as Fellow of Indian Academy of Medical Sciences and fellow of New York Academy of Medical Sciences. He published several original research articles in Indian and International Journals. His areas of interest include Sickle Cell Disease, Denue Fever and Diabetes Mellitus.
Padmasri Kalaprapoorna Boyi Bheemanna extolled Dr. Krishna Murty’s expertise in Medicine and called him ‘ DHANAVANTARI ‘. Prof. Dr. Brahmayya Sastry a doyen in the field of Physiology has this to say about Dr. Krishna Murty. ” In my 30 years of teaching experience in AMC I came across a few brilliant students and colleagues and Prof. Krishna Murty is a gem among them and is a man of exemplary conduct and character. He added lustre to the assignments he undertook and made more than a man’s contribution to each of them. ”
The entire Physician Community raises as one man to salute their teacher and mentor and feels immensely proud of his achievements and his contribution to the field of Medicine.

Prof. Uppalapati Venkatarathnam was born on 15th August 1923 at Guraja, Krishna District to Sri Yugandhara Rao and Smt Chandramma. He Graduated from Andhra Medical College in 1951 and obtained Diploma in Tuberculosis from Madras University in 1954. He worked as Assistant Professor of Chest diseases in Andhra Medical College. Later he passed MD (General Medicine) in 1960 from Andhra Medical College.
He joined Guntur Medical College as Assistant Professor of Medicine and during late sixties and seventies was Hon’ Professor of Medicine and Head of VI Unit for 12 years. During this period he shared his knowledge and experience with his students both under graduate and postgraduate. Many of them proved worthy of their teacher in later years excelling in their specialty. He has zeal to unravel the mystery of difficult cases. He used to bring problem cases from Vijayawada to Guntur Medical College – Govt General Hospital and discuss them with his postgraduates. He was an avid reader and had a huge library at home. He used to share his Journals with students. He was very particular about his postgraduates attending emergencies and learning from them.
He was President of IMA, Vijayawada branch, 1972-73. He was the founder – President of API, Krishna District Chapter. He rarely missed any CME Programme, national and state or local. He nearly attended all APICONS all over the country for nearly 35 years.
He was the recipient of Kasinathuni Nageswara Rao Panthulu Memorial Medal for best presentation of Clinical cases in IMA, Vijayawada for 10 years continuously. Age had never been a deterrent for him to attend a clinical meeting or to presents a case or to grill a presenter with intense questions.
For all his tough exterior, he had an endearing inner personality. He is also well known for his intellectual honesty. He was a role model for the younger generations as committed Doctor and efficient teacher. He had proved to one and all that there is no end point for the student of medicine and strove till his breath to upgrade his knowledge.
His noble life ended while he was participating in a CME Programme on the fateful day on 14th November 1999.
He was married to Raja Rathnam in 1953. His only son, Dr.U.S.V. Balaram is a Cardiologist.
His students of Guntur Medical College adore him and as a mark of respect along with API, Krishna District Chapter instituted this State Oration in his honour.

(Late) Sri Basireddygari Lakshmi Reddy, B.Com was born on 1 st July 1928 in Kottala Village in Ananthapur District to Sri B. Lakshmi Reddy garu & Smt. Obulamma.
He had his high school education in Gooty, 34 kms away from his village and was the lone member in his village to have studied up to Degree (B.Com) in Guntur in those days. He was also proficient in English Grammar and Geography. He joined as Audit clerk in October 1953 at Bellary in erstwhile Madras State and was allotted to Andhra Pradesh after the formation of Andhra State. He was very honest and sincere in his job and used to be transferred every 3 years (as per the rules in vogue those days) except when his eldest son was studying MBBS in Kurnool. He retired as Regional Deputy Director in 1988.
He was an ardent follower of the habit of writing dairy every day all through his life (which were preserved by his eldest son even today) and also wished his children to follow the same. He was married to Smt. B. Laxmi Devi, who unfortunately passed away when he was just 36 years old. He, as a lone parent, brought up well all his 4 children. He learnt Sanskrit Language at the age of 36 years after his wife passed away and acquired proficiency in that language to do in-depth study and analysis of all our great epics, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavatham etc., His deep love for literature and scriptures made him acquire all great books and neatly sorted, indexed and bounded them as a Divine Book Library, despite his meager salary and pension, to be handed over to his progeny (well preserved till today by his eldest son)
Sri Mahatma Gandhi’s call for participation in our epic freedom struggle aroused greatpatriotism in him and they used to sweep Harijanawadas during his school days and used to raise “Vande Mataram” slogans to defy British Police Officers. He used to contribute money regularly to Indian Army even when he was drawing a meager pension of Rs. 520 /- per month, as a mark of gratitude and appreciation of their sacrifice to safeguard the people of our country. These were examples of his great patriotism.
He passed away in September 1993 due to Idiopathic Cirrhosis of Liver with Hepatocellular Carcinoma. He was survived by two sons and two daughters, whom he single handedly moulded them in to well educated, disciplined and honest citizens of this nation. He was gem of a man with exemplary conduct and character with an immaculate self discipline and honesty and patriotism and adored himself with unfathomable knowledge in literature and Vedic scriptures.
In Honor and fond memory of this noble and erudite person Sri B. Laxmi Reddy garu, this endowment lecture is instituted by his eldest son Dr. B. Ramachandra Reddy, MD.,FICP, former Professor & HOD of Medicine, Kurnool Medical College & Additional Director of Medical Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh and past Chairman of AP API (2012).
